I’ve also seen this a few times so I’ll post some of the dialog I recently had with a customer and my reply. I may do this more often to speed up the posting and hopefully help others that are expereicing the same problems…

I have many clients submit text for large documents using Microsoft Word with style sheets I created. I import these Word files into Quark and go through and replace all of the Word styles with ones I created in Quark. I’m pretty sure this is a common practice among designers.

There is a quick and easy fix that sometimes if overlooked, and should speed up the process.
Many designers use this method everyday, by importing MSWord Docs for placing text. Setting up style sheets to help with this. Upon import, you can at this point specify which “MS Word Style” You’d like to assign to a QuarkXPress Style. Take a look at the import text dialog, if the “Include Style Sheets” option is checked you’ll get a new dialog that lets you map styles from MSWord to your QuarkXPress Style Sheets.
